Unesco City of Literature Heidelberg

Idea, concept, creative/art direction, editorial design

Heidelberg applied officially for “Unesco Creative City of Literature”. Together with “Kontext Kommunikation” we realized the idea, the concept and the design of the application.

Heidelberg has a long humanities-oriented and literary tradition. Furthermore there is a high publisher’s density and a flourishing creative culture with a lot of students and young people.

The connection of these two levels makes up the starting point of our visual concept. We created a printed journal which plays with classic and modern elements. In the publication we operate on the contrast of different fonts, a flexible raster and a conspicuous special color that causes a high recognition factor. An alphabetic record helps to get quickly one’s bearings.

In November 2014 Heidelberg was admitted as “Unesco City of Literature” in the international circle of cities of literature! We congratulate sincerely and share Heidelberg’s happiness and that of all literature creators.

We developed the corporate design & the website for Stefan Schwark Photography. We created a minimalistic “non branding” to direct the attention on the significant photography.

Typographically we work with a modern typewriter font to underline the artistic creative demands of his photographic approach.

Andreas Wundersee organizes events & exhibitions, creates concept art and paints naturalistic images. Due to his work & his actions he arouses the enthusiasm for art and moves other people to join in or reflect.

By his art Andreas Wundersee makes creative rooms and connections. Because of this we invented a signet which merges his initials into one sign. Due to its simple form it is easy to remember and it can be used graphically and artistically in different manners. In this way a dynamic logo system is created which is faithful to the different activities of Andreas Wundersee.

In contrast to the classic sign we use gaudy combinations of color paper which visualize variety, fun and the enthusiasm in art.

“Offbeat – the book” pays attention on people and music. We visited eight students in Germany and Austria to talk with them about music.

In interesting talks we found out what is fascinating on music for them and which role it plays in their life.

Besides the idea and the concept we portrayed these people photographically and created the design and the typographic concept of the book.

Bobby Junior is a German beat & music producer.

For Bobby Junior we created a complete corporate design including naming, visual language, photography, artwork, t-shirts and an album trailer.

His music consists of a mix of different genres (Jazz, Hip Hop, Soul, Rock etc.) This eclecticism regains in the combination of different abstract forms in the logo. We transfered the “oldschool” character of the music with authentic black and white photography into a visual presentation. The combination of photography, logo and a consequent typography creates a concise corporate design.

With our work we like to help musicians to get more attention in order to keep music as important cultural asset of our society.

For the producer Bobby Junior we filmed, cut and set the trailer of his first album.

On the one hand the term „Offbeat“ describes the characteristics of the music of Bobby Junior. On the other hand “to be offbeat”: Leaving everyday life to discover new dimensions and to broaden one’s horizons.

In the video both interpretations of the term “offbeat“ are blended. An interesting mix is created which connects the real travelling with the wandering away into musical worlds. As well as the visual language the movie is designed in black and white to emphasize the “oldschool touch” of the music visually.

The book „People in Heidelberg“ is a further contribution of our studio to the application of the city of Heidelberg as “Unesco Creative City of Literature”. The book is a collection of 30 persons who shaped Heidelberg literarily.

Our concept puts the accent on the people. The design accentuates the humanistic and the “warm” character of the city. We created drawn illustrations of people to design this book emotionally and appealingly. We chose a serif font for the design to make humanity apparent by through the font.

The book conveys in a playful manner how it is to get to know a person. A short text and an illustration present each human. If you open the perforation of the pages it is possible to pay attention with human beings in a closer way. The view on them changes forever.

For Valentina & Philip we designed the invitation of their wedding.

We developed a classic signet which is applied on the invitation and other wedding products as embossing. Besides we designed a double card that is shipped in a box with red confetti. So the invitation gets a special touch that stands out through other invitations.

„Moin Clothing“ is a sustainable fashion label that designs modern minimalistic graphic shirts in small editions. These shirts are produced with 100% organic cotton.

For the corporate design of the label we developed an own logo type which visualizes the special graphic demand. This font together with a black circle makes up the logo. The circle underlines the minimalistic shirt design.

Beside the business stationary we designed a small lookbook which gathers all designs of the first collection.

The “Read Magazine“ was planned as a city magazine of Heidelberg. It reports the latest cultural events, conveys knowledge about the city and educates in literature and poetry. This publication shall encourage young people to tackle with texts, literature, language and the city of Heidelberg.

With this project we won the pitch for the application of the city of Heidelberg as “Unesco Creative City of Literature”. It served as presentation of the final application.

For the solar branch of the traditional brand Telefunken we designed a new logo, corporate design and a brochure of about 150 pages.

Telefunken Solar supports actively energy revolution by building and operating solar plant. Due to major projects the percentage of electricity generation through renewable energies in Europe is enlarged.

For the corporate design we complemented the classic Telefunken logo by a specially designed font. The identity is embossed by the conspicuous color red and modern minimalism in the use. Because of the clear typography and color selection the corporate design makes a lasting, professional impression.

Today’s consumer society confronts us with a myriad of products. The human is almost reduced to a marginal phenomenon . Often it is no longer about interpersonal dialogues but object- focused monologues.

“Center” visualizes different people in their isolated world of products in an absurd manner. By abstraction of the objects and backgrounds the human is being moved back into the center of attention.

“Center” presents people living their daily activities. By the reduced design the individuality and humanity can be perceived better again

„Atelier Art isst“ combines art and food. It organizes small events at which people from all over the world give a talk about nutrition. At the same time an adequate art exhibition to every lecture takes place.

Due to the connection of two completely different fields exciting synergies and meetings happen.

To provide a framwork for these events, we designed an abstract logo for which forms the initials AAI. It is concise and widely applicable. Additionally we designed an own playful font that underlines the artistic demand of these events.
